Dr Esteban Balla, DVM, from SIBRA (Servicio Integral de Biotecnologías en Reproducción Animal) presented a veterinarian’s view of bull fertility testing in Argentina. Most of Argentina’s cattle are farmed for beef, so conception rates are intimately linked with revenue generation. Esteban emphasised the need for bull soundness to be tested regularly and he uses Dynescan to assess fresh semen quality at the farm. Removing non-productive bulls is very important to improve revenue and sustainability. The value of evaluating semen quality as a function of time was also highlighted, with case studies indicating that semen that initially appeared to be of high quality can lose motility within minutes revealing a new and convenient way to identify poor reproductive performance during bull fertility testing.

Professor Sabine Koelle from University College Dublin presented exciting insights from her research on how spermatozoa travel through and interact with the female genital tract. Using confocal imaging within a live reproductive tract, Sabine is able to visualize the key stages of a spermatozoa’s journey though the reproductive tract to the egg is highlighted and how only the most viable remain capable of fertilisation. Contrary to the literature, Sabine’s research has shown that sperm remain motile within the sperm reservoir due to secretions from the oviduct.

Sabine highlighted how the Dynescan offers unparalleled precision enabling her to assess the quality of semen samples used in her research and time-dependent measurements enable her to optimise protocols. Overall, she stressed the need for a more holistic view of fertility with factors such as genetics, diseases, medications and husbandry being key indicators for the viability of spermatozoa for fertilization.

The D4D team are now using Dynescan to test semen straws to make sure that they are delivering the best quality to the cow, thus helping to ensure smallholders making enough money to survive. The Dynescan device is well suited for this task since the output is very easy to use and results are highly reproducible.

Poor experimental practice when using traditional CASA systems often hid the real values. Dynescan is now helping to provide quality control through numerous challenges involved in the AI process including: handling of samples, liquid nitrogen storage and transportation.
